Why hand-mixing stops making sense past a certain point

Small pours look like they can be mixed by hand, and often are — until you count the shifts it actually takes and the batch consistency you end up with. Manual mixing across a day gives you visibly different concrete from the first batch to the last, because the workers get tired and the water and cement ratios drift.

A tilting-drum mixer at 28 rpm mixes each 240-litre batch the same way in a couple of minutes, and holds that consistency across the shift. The finished slab or footing looks like one pour rather than a set of patches, and the mason spends the day placing concrete rather than making it.

The tilting drum is deliberate. It empties fully and cleanly with one lever pull, and it makes discharge to a barrow or into a form fast enough that the mix doesn't stiffen in the drum between batches.

Electric or petrol — how to choose

Same drum capacity and drum speed on both machines. The choice is about the site power supply.

This electric mixer when the site has 220 V single-phase mains. It costs less to run per batch, is quieter, produces no exhaust, and works safely inside partly enclosed spaces where a petrol engine is not permitted.

The petrol mini concrete mixer when there is no supply on site — remote plots, temporary works, ground-clearing sites, external repairs on the highway. A trailing cable is not practical there.

Where it is used

Small residential slab and footing pours, plaster and mortar for masonry work, repair patches and reinstatements, staircase and lintel casting, small precast production, and any job small enough that a full-size mixer or ready-mix delivery is not proportional to the batch size.
