The Jamshedji concrete ring saw is a hand-held wet cutting saw that takes a 400 mm ring blade and cuts to 300 mm deep — roughly double what a conventional saw achieves on the same blade size. It does this because the blade is driven from its outer rim rather than a central arbor, so there is no hub in the way of the cut. Why a ring saw cuts deeper

On a conventional circular saw the blade turns on a central arbor. That hub and its guard sit inside the blade circle, so the saw can only sink the blade until the hub reaches the surface — in practice a little under half the blade diameter. A 400 mm blade gives you roughly 145 mm of cut.

A ring saw removes the hub entirely. The blade is a ring, driven by friction rollers pressing on its outer rim, so the centre is open and the blade can sink far further into the material. The same 400 mm blade reaches 300 mm.

That difference decides whether a wall can be cut from one side. At 145 mm you have to cut from both faces and align the two kerfs — awkward, slow, and often impossible where the far side is inaccessible. At 300 mm most block and concrete walls go in one pass from one side.

Where it is used

Cutting door and window openings in existing walls, service penetrations, removing sections of slab or wall in refurbishment and demolition, utility and drainage installations, and cutting stoneware and concrete pipe.

Ring saw or floor saw

These solve different problems. The ring saw is hand-held and cuts vertically and into walls, at depth, in confined positions. A walk-behind floor saw cuts horizontally into slabs and pavements, running along a line under its own weight.

For horizontal work — expansion joints, control joints, trench lines, road cutting — use the petrol concrete groove cutter or the electric concrete cutter, both of which take 350–500 mm blades to 180 mm depth. Use the ring saw where the cut is vertical, overhead, or deeper than a floor saw will reach.
