The Jamshedji concrete scarifier is a 250 mm walk-behind surface planer powered by an original 11.7 HP Honda GX390 petrol engine, milling 3–8 mm deep with tungsten carbide flail cutters. Also called a concrete planer or milling machine, it levels high spots, strips old road markings and coatings, grooves ramps, and cuts slip-resistant texture into walkways. Being petrol-driven it works on roads and isolated sites with no power supply. Weight 145 kg.

Key specifications at a glance

  • Engine: Honda GX390 petrol, 11.7 HP
  • Drum width: 250 mm
  • Milling depth: adjustable 3–8 mm
  • Cutters: 6 hexagonal shafts with tungsten carbide flails
  • Dust port: 50 mm vacuum connection
  • Weight: 145 kg

What a scarifier does that a grinder cannot

A scarifier does not abrade the surface — it hits it. Tungsten carbide flail cutters mounted on rotating shafts strike the concrete repeatedly, fracturing and removing material rather than wearing it away. That makes it far faster than grinding when there is real depth to take off, and it leaves behind a deliberately rough, textured profile.

Sometimes that texture is the point. Anti-skid surfaces on ramps and walkways, and a deep mechanical key before a heavy screed or overlay, both need a rough profile that a smooth ground finish would not provide.

Sometimes the texture is a stage. On coating removal, contractors strip the old material with the scarifier and then bring the exposed slab back to flat with a concrete floor grinder. Using the grinder alone on a thick coating simply loads and burns the diamond pads.

Scarifier or grinder — how to choose

  • Scarifier — thick coating and adhesive removal, road markings, laitance, levelling high spots fast, anti-skid texture, mechanical key before overlay
  • Grinder — polished concrete, epoxy and coating preparation, terrazzo, final flatness, smooth finish
  • Both — coating jobs where material comes off first and the slab is then finished flat

Key features

  • Original Honda GX390 air-cooled petrol engine — torque and runtime on isolated road sites
  • No power supply needed, so it works anywhere on the carriageway
  • Six hexagonal shafts carrying tungsten carbide flail cutters through aged concrete and asphalt
  • Heavy-duty crank handle for precise milling depth adjustment up to 8 mm in a single pass
  • Reinforced steel box frame chassis built for road duty
  • 50 mm dust extraction port for vacuum attachment, keeping silica dust down
  • Vibration-isolated handlebars with rubber dampers to reduce operator fatigue

Where it is used

Road and highway resurfacing preparation, removing thermoplastic road markings, levelling trip hazards and high spots on footpaths, grooving vehicle ramps for grip, anti-skid texturing on walkways and loading bays, and stripping coatings, adhesives and laitance before an overlay.

Where a saw cut rather than a milled surface is needed — expansion joints, trench lines, cutting out slab sections — use the petrol concrete groove cutter, which runs the same 11.7 HP Honda GX390 engine.

Frequently asked questions

What is a concrete scarifier used for?

Milling away the top layer of concrete or asphalt — removing coatings, road markings, laitance and high spots, and cutting anti-skid texture or a mechanical key for an overlay.

What is the difference between a scarifier and a floor grinder?

A scarifier strikes the surface with tungsten carbide cutters and leaves a rough textured profile. A grinder abrades with diamond pads and leaves a smooth, flat, polishable surface. Scarifier to remove material fast or create texture; grinder to finish flat and smooth.

How deep can it mill in one pass?

3 mm to 8 mm, set with the crank handle. Deeper removal is done in successive passes.

Can it remove thermoplastic road markings?

Yes — that is one of its main applications, along with coating and adhesive removal on concrete and asphalt.

Does it need a power supply?

No. It runs on an 11.7 HP Honda GX390 petrol engine, which is why it suits carriageway and remote site work where no electricity is available.

Which parts wear out?

The tungsten carbide flail cutters. They are a routine consumable replaced as a set — keep a spare set on site. Spare drum assemblies are also stocked.
