The GX390 air filter is the replacement air-cleaner element for Honda GX340 and GX390 engines (Honda part 17218-ZE3-505), the paper filter that keeps site dust out of the carburettor and engine. What it does and when to replace it
The air filter is the engine's first line of defence against dust. Petrol scarifiers and groove cutters work in exactly the dusty, gritty conditions that clog a filter fastest — the element traps that dust before it reaches the carburettor and cylinder.
A blocked filter chokes the engine: it loses power, runs rich, uses more fuel and can be hard to start. A damaged or badly fitted filter is worse, because it lets abrasive dust straight into the engine and causes real internal wear. Check it at every service, clean it between services, and replace it when it is clogged, oil-soaked or torn. Filters are cheap; the engine they protect is not.
