What it does and when to replace it
The housing is the hard-iron frame the base plate bolts into. It carries the full force of every blow from the ramming shaft down into the striking plate and holds the plate square to the ground, so it takes constant heavy impact even though it does not contact the soil directly.
It lasts longer than the base plate, which is the sacrificial wear face, but it is not permanent — replace it if it cracks, if the mounting points wear so the plate no longer seats tightly, or if it distorts. A loose or cracked housing lets the plate move under impact, which wastes compaction energy and accelerates wear on everything around it. It is often replaced together with the base plate during a foot overhaul.
