Tamping Rammer Honda GX160 – Petrol Jumping Jack, 3-3.5T Impact
Tamping Rammer Honda GX160 – Petrol Jumping Jack, 3-3.5T Impact
The Jamshedji Honda tamping rammer is a petrol jumping jack soil compactor powered by a 5.5 HP Honda GX160 engine, delivering 3–3.5 tonnes of impact force at 700 blows per minute and compacting to a depth of 300 mm. Also called a dhumas machine or earth rammer, it compacts soil, sand, gravel and asphalt in trenches, foundations, pits, backfill and around structures — the confined places a plate compactor or roller cannot reach. Weight is 85 kg with a 340 × 280 mm plate.
Key specifications at a glance
- Engine: Honda GX160 petrol, 5.5 HP
- Impact force: 3–3.5 tonnes
- Impact frequency: 700 blows/min
- Compaction depth: up to 300 mm
- Plate size: 340 × 280 mm, 16 mm thick
- Weight: 85 kg
Why a rammer rather than a plate compactor
A plate compactor works the surface. A tamping rammer drives energy downward in a narrow column, which is what cohesive soils and clay backfill actually need — and it does it in a 340 mm footprint that fits inside a service trench.
That is why rammers are specified for trench backfill around pipes and cables, column and footing foundations, pits, and the strips alongside walls and kerbs. Compaction to 300 mm depth in those locations is what stops the settlement that later cracks a slab or dips a road patch.
Petrol or diesel — how to choose
Jamshedji supplies rammers in both. This Honda petrol machine gives 3–3.5 tonnes of impact at 85 kg. The diesel tamping rammer gives 5 tonnes at 130 kg.
Take the petrol machine where the rammer has to be lifted in and out of trenches repeatedly, carried between locations, or worked on upper levels — 45 kg less matters when two men are handling it all day. It also starts easily and the Honda GX160 is serviceable in any Indian town.
Take the diesel machine for sustained heavy compaction on large earthworks, where the higher impact force and lower fuel cost per hour outweigh the extra weight. For enclosed areas where exhaust is a problem, use the electric tamping rammer.

Spare parts for the tamping rammer
Wear parts are stocked and dispatched from Pune: rubber bellow, base plate, base plate housing, clutch, rubber pads and accelerator cable. The bellow is the routine consumable — keep a spare on site.

Frequently asked questions
What is a tamping rammer used for?
Compacting soil, sand, gravel and asphalt in confined areas — trench backfill around pipes and cables, foundations, pits, and strips alongside walls and kerbs. Its narrow plate reaches places a plate compactor or roller cannot.
Should I buy a tamping rammer or a plate compactor?
A rammer drives energy downward in a narrow column, which suits cohesive soils, clay and trench backfill. A plate compactor works the surface over a wider area, which suits open ground and granular sub-base. Many contractors carry both.
What is the difference between the petrol and diesel rammers?
Impact force and weight. This Honda petrol machine gives 3–3.5 tonnes at 85 kg; the diesel gives 5 tonnes at 130 kg. Petrol suits work where the machine is lifted in and out of trenches repeatedly; diesel suits sustained heavy compaction on large earthworks.
How deep does it compact?
Up to 300 mm per layer. Deeper fills should be compacted in successive layers rather than attempted in one lift.
What is a dhumas machine?
Dhumas is the common name for a tamping rammer on Indian sites. Jumping jack and earth rammer refer to the same machine.
Which part wears out first?
The rubber bellow. It is a routine consumable rather than a breakdown item — most contractors keep a spare on site along with rubber pads.
