TMT Rebar Coupler Sleeves – 16, 20, 25, 32mm, IS 16172
Jamshedji TMT rebar coupler sleeves are threaded mechanical splices that join reinforcement bars end to end, in 16, 20, 25 and 32 mm sizes. Manufactured from structural carbon steel to IS 16172:2014 and suitable for Fe500D, Fe550 and Fe600 rebar, they replace lap splices on high-rise columns, metro piers, flyovers and bridge structures. Supplied direct from MIDC Bhosari, Pune, with bulk rates and dispatch across India.
Why couplers instead of lap splices
A lapped joint ties two overlapping bars together and relies on the concrete to transfer load between them. That overlap runs 40 to 60 bar diameters — on a 32 mm bar, more than a metre of steel per joint that exists only to make the connection.
A threaded coupler makes a direct mechanical connection instead. The steel saved is typically 15–20% of reinforcement weight per column. Just as importantly, the joint profile is slim, so concrete flows properly through a congested column node instead of arching over a bundle of lapped bars and leaving voids.
Under IS 16172, a correctly made threaded connection develops bar-break performance — failure occurs in the parent rebar before the coupler connection gives way.
Specifications by size
| Rebar size | Outer diameter | Coupler length | Thread pitch | Grade compliance |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 16 mm | 25 mm | 40 mm | 2.5 mm | Fe500D / Fe550 / Fe600 |
| 20 mm | 31 mm | 50 mm | 2.5 mm | Fe500D / Fe550 / Fe600 |
| 25 mm | 39 mm | 62 mm | 3.0 mm | Fe500D / Fe550 / Fe600 |
| 32 mm | 49 mm | 80 mm | 3.0 mm | Fe500D / Fe550 / Fe600 |
Key advantages
- Saves reinforcement steel — eliminates lap length, typically 15–20% of steel weight per column
- Reduces congestion — slim joint profile lets concrete flow cleanly through heavily reinforced nodes
- Full tension and compression transfer — complies with IS 16172, delivering bar-break performance
- Simple to install — screwed up with a standard pipe wrench; parallel threading avoids cross-threading on site
- Manufactured to Indian Standards from structural carbon steel, with test certificates available
You will also need a threading machine
Couplers only work on threaded bar ends. Every bar has to be parallel-threaded before it can be coupled, which is done with the CDRG45 bar threading machine (16–40 mm capacity, 120 mm thread length). Threading rollers are matched to bar diameter — 16 / 18 / 20 / 22 mm and 25–32 mm sets are stocked in Pune.
Bar is normally cut to length before threading, on a GQ50 bar cutting machine for the larger diameters.
Where couplers are specified
High-rise column reinforcement, metro viaducts and piers, flyover and bridge structures, heavy raft and pile-cap foundations, precast connections, and any location where reinforcement congestion or steel quantity makes lapping impractical.

Frequently asked questions
What sizes of rebar coupler are available?
16 mm, 20 mm, 25 mm and 32 mm, all suitable for Fe500D, Fe550 and Fe600 rebar.
How much steel does a coupler save?
Typically 15–20% of reinforcement weight per column, by removing the lap length that would otherwise be needed at every splice.
Do couplers meet Indian Standards?
Yes. They are manufactured from structural carbon steel to IS 16172:2014, and a correctly made connection gives bar-break performance — the parent rebar fails before the coupler joint does.
Do I need a special machine to use them?
Yes. Bar ends must be parallel-threaded first, using a bar threading machine such as the CDRG45. Couplers cannot be used on unthreaded bar.
How are couplers installed on site?
They are screwed onto the threaded bar ends with a standard pipe wrench. The parallel thread form prevents cross-threading, so no specialist tooling is required at the point of installation.
Can I get test certificates?
Yes. Test certificate documentation is available on request, which most project QA departments will ask for before couplers are accepted on site.
What is the price of TMT rebar couplers in India?
Pricing depends on size and order quantity. Send your sizes, quantities and site location on WhatsApp for a GST-inclusive quotation.
