Why two vibrating drums
On a tandem roller both drums vibrate, so the machine compacts on the front pass and again on the rear — one travel pass does the work of two. That matters most on asphalt, where the material has a working window before it cools and stiffens: fewer passes means the mat gets closed while it is still hot.
Two drums also leave a flatter finished surface than a single drum does, because the machine is supported at both ends rather than pivoting on one roll. On footpaths, small roads and parking areas where the finished level is visible and walked on, that difference shows.
Where it fits between a plate compactor and a road roller
Below this machine, a diesel plate compactor handles sub-base and granular fill over open ground, and a tamping rammer handles trench backfill and confined strips. Above it, the ride on mini vibratory roller gives 5 tonnes with an operator seated, for larger road and car park work.
The single drum vibratory roller is the alternative walk-behind: one vibrating drum, lighter and narrower, better suited to trench work and tight access where a 2450 mm long tandem cannot turn.

What is the difference between a double drum and a single drum roller?
On a double drum both drums vibrate, so one travel pass compacts twice and the finished surface is flatter. A single drum roller is lighter and narrower, which suits trench work and tight access where a tandem machine cannot turn.
Can it compact asphalt as well as soil?
Yes. Asphalt is one of its main applications — small roads, footpaths, parking areas and patch repairs — alongside soil and gravel.
Should I use a roller or a plate compactor?
A plate compactor suits granular sub-base over open ground. A roller is the machine once you need a finished, trafficable surface — roads, footpaths and parking areas. For confined trench backfill, use a tamping rammer.
How is a 680 kg roller transported to site?
