Tamping Rammer Clutch – RM 80, 19mm Engine Shaft, Hard Iron
Tamping Rammer Clutch – RM 80, 19mm Engine Shaft, Hard Iron
This is the replacement clutch for the RM 80 tamping rammer, made from hard iron and fitting a 19 mm engine shaft. The clutch is what connects the running engine to the rammer's percussion mechanism, so it wears with use and is replaced as a service part.
Fits
- RM 80 tamping rammers — engine shaft size 19 mm
- Tamping Rammer Honda GX160 — petrol jumping jack
- Diesel Tamping Rammer — Koop 5.5 HP
Check your engine shaft size against 19 mm before ordering. Other RM 80 service parts: rubber bellow, base plate, rubber pads and accelerator cable.
What it does and when to replace it
A tamping rammer works by driving a spring-loaded ram up and down, striking the ground several hundred times a minute. The engine runs continuously, but that percussion only happens when the operator opens the throttle — the clutch is what makes that connection. Below engagement speed it stays disengaged, so the engine can idle without the rammer jumping; open the throttle and the clutch grips, transmitting drive to the percussion mechanism.
That means the clutch engages and releases constantly through a working day, and its friction surfaces wear. Replace it when the rammer is slow or reluctant to start jumping as you open the throttle, when percussion is inconsistent, when the rammer creeps at idle, or when you notice burning smell or glazing. Hard iron is used for the wear resistance this duty cycle demands.

Frequently asked questions
Which rammer does this clutch fit?
RM 80 tamping rammers with a 19 mm engine shaft. Check your shaft size before ordering.
What does the rammer clutch do?
It connects the running engine to the percussion mechanism when the operator opens the throttle, and disengages at idle so the rammer does not jump.
How do I know when to replace it?
When the rammer is slow or reluctant to start jumping as you open the throttle, when percussion is inconsistent, when it creeps at idle, or when you notice burning smell or glazing.
Why is it made of hard iron?
The clutch engages and releases constantly through a working day, so it needs the wear resistance hard iron provides.
What is the price of the tamping rammer clutch?
