Why concrete has to be vibrated

Freshly poured concrete is full of trapped air. Left in place, those voids become honeycombing and weak points that cut the strength of the finished pour and expose the reinforcement to corrosion. A needle vibrator is dropped into the wet concrete and its high-frequency vibration liquefies the mix momentarily, letting the air rise out and the concrete flow tight around the bars and into the corners of the formwork. Proper vibration is the difference between concrete that reaches its design strength and concrete that does not.

Drive and needle — how the system works

A needle vibrator is two parts: the drive (the engine or motor that generates the power) and the needle (the poker on a flexible shaft that goes into the concrete). The drive and needle are chosen separately — you pick the drive for the power and portability the site needs, and the needle diameter for the pour.

This 7.5 HP petrol unit is the top drive. Petrol means it runs anywhere — no mains supply, no cable — which suits large, remote and industrial pours; and 7.5 HP is the most power in the range, enough to drive the biggest needles through stiff, heavily reinforced mixes without bogging down.

Matching the needle to the pour

This drive accepts needle dies from 35 mm to 60 mm. As a rule, a bigger needle drives more energy over a wider radius for mass concrete, while a smaller needle fits between congested reinforcement and into narrow sections. Needles are sold separately so you can match the diameter and hose length to the job:

• 35 mm × 6 m — narrow sections and congested rebar
• 50 mm × 4 m and 50 mm × 6 m — general slabs and beams
• 60 mm × 4 m and 60 mm × 6 m — heavier mass concrete
• 70 mm × 6 m — the largest pours
