Where is Purandar Airport?

The airport site sits in Purandar taluka in the south-east of Pune district, between Saswad and Jejuri, roughly 40 to 45 km by road from central Pune depending on where you start. The site is known in planning documents as Site 1A, the location first selected in 2016.

The airport is being built because Pune's existing airport at Lohegaon shares its runway and airspace with an Indian Air Force station, which limits how much civilian traffic it can handle. A dedicated civilian airport at Purandar gives Pune, and the wider western Maharashtra region including Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur, an airport that can grow with demand.

The seven villages and land acquisition

Land for the first phase is being acquired from seven villages in Purandar taluka: Pargaon (Memane), Khanwadi, Munjwadi, Ekhatpur, Kumbharvalan, Udachiwadi and Vanpuri. Together they make up about 1,216 hectares, or roughly 3,000 acres, for the core airport.

The acquisition is being carried out under the Maharashtra Industrial Development Act, with the Pune District Collector as coordinator and MIDC as the nodal agency. Progress over the last few months:

When Milestone
February 2026 State cabinet approves the project framework, the SPV structure and a loan of about ₹6,000 crore for land acquisition
April 2026 High Power Committee fixes compensation at about ₹1.61 crore per acre; the state issues a guarantee for the land loan
May 2026 Formal acquisition and compensation payments begin across all seven villages
June 2026 About 851 hectares acquired; consent deadline extended to 30 June at farmers' request
22 September 2026 Bombay High Court dismisses farmers' petition seeking a change of site, holding that site selection is a technical and policy decision
Late September 2026 About 910 hectares acquired and about ₹3,875 crore paid in compensation; a final consent window runs to 10 October
20 October 2026 (target) Administration aims to complete the acquisition process; land without consent after 10 October is to be acquired compulsorily

Compensation for landowners

The base compensation rate was fixed at about ₹1.61 crore per acre. Compensation notices also cover houses, wells, borewells, pipelines, orchards and fruit trees on acquired land.

Landowners who give consent within the deadline are eligible for a 10% developed-plot return and other benefits under the rehabilitation policy. These benefits do not apply to land acquired compulsorily. The High Court has noted that landowners can still challenge the amount of compensation through the proper legal process if they believe it is inadequate.

Who is building Purandar Airport?

The project is being developed through a special purpose vehicle, Purandar International Airport Ltd, owned by four state agencies:

  • ✔ CIDCO, 51%, the City and Industrial Development Corporation, which also developed Navi Mumbai International Airport
  • ✔ MADC, 19%, the Maharashtra Airport Development Company, the state's airport development agency
  • ✔ MIDC, 15%, the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation, nodal agency for land acquisition
  • ✔ PMRDA, 15%, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, responsible for road connectivity

Repayment of the land acquisition loan is shared in the same proportions. The airport itself is expected to be built and operated by a private concessionaire selected through competitive bidding, as with other recent greenfield airports in India.

Runways, capacity and the aerocity

The airport is planned with two parallel runways of 4,000 m × 60 m, long enough for wide-body international aircraft, and an ultimate capacity of 75 million passengers a year, built up in phases as traffic grows. Alongside the airport, an aerocity of about 253 hectares has been reported, with commercial space, hotels and logistics facilities. The site is also planned as a cargo and logistics hub for western Maharashtra's manufacturing belt.

Connectivity: roads to the airport

PMRDA is developing concrete road connections to the airport, totalling about 61 km across six routes:

Route Length Agency
SH 117, Uruli Kanchan to Jejuri 15 km PMRDA
MDR 61, Saswad to Pargaon Choufula 10.5 km PMRDA
SH 131, Bopdev Ghat road 19.5 km PMRDA
MDR 36, Khed Shivapur to Saswad 16 km PMRDA
NH 965, Dive Ghat road – NHAI
SH 119, Kapurhol to Saswad – PWD

These link the airport to NH 48 (Pune–Bengaluru) and NH 65 (Pune–Solapur), and to the MSRDC outer ring road, whose alignment runs through Purandar taluka. See our Pune Ring Road guide for the ring road's route and status.

When will Purandar Airport be ready?

Dates on this project have moved many times since the site was first chosen in 2016, so treat any single target with caution. The current sequence is:

1
Complete land acquisition, targeted for 20 October 2026.
2
Appoint the developer and award construction, through bidding by the SPV. Reports in July expected tendering to follow soon after acquisition.
3
Construction, typically around three years for the first phase of a greenfield airport of this size.
4
Opening of the first phase, which on that sequence points to around 2029 to 2030. An earlier official target of March 2029 for operations is now tight.

The two things to watch are the formal completion of acquisition and the issue of the developer tender. Once a concessionaire is appointed, the construction clock starts.

What Purandar Airport means for Pune

Air travel: a dedicated civilian airport removes the capacity limit that Lohegaon's shared military runway places on Pune, and gives the city direct international connections at a much larger scale.

Industry and logistics: a cargo-capable airport close to the Chakan, Ranjangaon, Baramati and Kurkumbh industrial belts, linked by the ring road, strengthens the case for export manufacturing and warehousing in eastern and southern Pune district.

Real estate: Saswad, Jejuri, Uruli Kanchan, Hadapsar, Undri and the Bopdev Ghat and Dive Ghat corridors are the areas most often linked with the airport. Anyone buying land near the site should check that a plot is outside the acquisition area and has proper non-agricultural conversion before paying.

The construction work the airport will create

A greenfield airport is one of the largest civil construction jobs there is. Specialist contractors will run the runway paving trains, but a large share of the work is done by subcontractors using site equipment:

Our factory at MIDC Bhosari is within driving distance of the site, so contractors working on the airport, its connector roads and the ring road can inspect machines before buying and get delivery and spares support locally.
